The American Dream ? -Nomandland

                From Caravan to Oscar

Why don’t we talk about ’Nomadland’ which is nominated at  93th Academy Awards  including with 'Best Film', 'Best Actress', 'Best Director', 'Best Picture','Best Director' and 'Best Film Editing'?

‘Nomadland’, which director Chloé Zhao also written, is actually an adaptation of the novel. Jessica Burder's novel ' Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century’ hit the shelves in 2017.

Let's take a closer look at this very impressive  production of Chloé Zhao, who previously directed films such as ‘the Rider’, ‘Songs My Brothers Taught Me’

The American Dream ?

There is a phenomenal belief that America is a land of opportunity. America ranks first at the head of countries that are especially preferred by the masses who cannot find work in their countries, young people who want to get a quality education. One of the most effective reasons for making these impressions is that Hollywood points the country as a ‘Land of Dreams‘. So, Is America really so fantastic  ?

'Nomadland' slams the facts like a slap in the face through a window that will destroy this perception of us all. You will change your mind after watching the movie that conveys the real problems of the American people. Nomandland describes the impact of the 2008 Economic Crisis on individuals.

The journey of Fern

Fern loses her job after the crisis. Even If  She retires,She has to work because She can not have enough wages. Fern(who never took off her wedding ring throughout the film and denied her possible relationship with Dave), who cannot stand the lose of her husband as well, She has nowhere to go.

She calls herself a ’houseless‘, not a’homeless'. The two are not the same thing. She turns her van into a caravan and hits  the roads. She works as long as she gets a job on her travels.(It's quite contrary to the Protitip of ‘America’, where we think a group of people reaching retirement age are working in jobs.

Fern meets a group of people during her journey. In fact, many Americans over the age of 60+ are just like her. People that She met had similar traumas. Some have lost a child/wife, others are in debt or have a deadly disease.

These Americans, who have a common destiny, are actually in a state of escape with a caravan journey. Their consolation is that they are not alone. Despite everything, the road is long and there are new routes to go. Ultimately, life does go on…

'Blue is the Warmest Colour'

Fern prefers blue and shades of blue throughout the film. Blue , known as the color of freedom, is exactly what Fern looks like and describes her pshcology . We  watch a strong  woman who tries to overcome all the difficulties alone. With her rejection of resident life, Fern continues her caravan journey.

P.S : Characters except Fern (Frances McDormand) are real persons featured in the book. Bringing life to their own lives, these characters keep a ‘documentary’ feeling when watching.

Set in the deserts of America, dazzling with its exquisite sunrise-sunset landscapes and engulfing you with its music, this film deserves an Oscar.

Let's see how many OscarsNomadland ' gets.
